LIZ HOWE: I work on flat pieces of mainly white stoneware which has been coated with a porcelain slip; sometimes for smaller pieces I use porcelain clay. The surface is painted, stamped, stencilled and slip trailed. I imprint using all sorts of found objects and clay stamps. The piece is then formed over a plaster hump mould, it is bisque fired after which it is rubbed with oxides and part glazed. I am influenced by the sea, plant life, and scraps of old fabric. Very briefly I studied textile design at Somerset College of Art, and then later on took up painting. About ten years ago I did an OCN in ceramics at Bridgwater College; this is where I got hooked on clay! I haven’t stopped making since.
