Ginger Fig Gallery
gallery
I have worked with wood for almost as long as I can remember. During my time at Herefordshire College, I was able to develop my ideas and place my work in galleries. On leaving college, I continued to show in galleries and started work as a joiner. I have now been qualified for a number of years. Joinery has enabled me to increase my technical knowledge of wood working. I take my inspiration from the wood itself, the working method used and the beauty of ancient objects, such as boats, bowls and other wooden artefacts from cultures from around the world. My work is made with traditional hand tools; axe, drawknives, saw and gouges are all used to achieve the final from. Using these tools gives the surface texture and pattern. This effect is emphasised by charring the surface and then removing the carbon. Each piece is then sealed with a beeswax or oil finish. This gives good durability and makes care of the pieces easy, requiring only a light brushing with a clean, soft brush.
